Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing such medications need to be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Users who have discontinued the medication describe a intense return of cravings.

"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle support.
